Lady palm: Common Problems

Lady palm with yellow and brown-tipped leaves in a natural indoor environment.

Yellow Leaves

Yellow leaves on a lady palm can have several causes. The most common are overwatering, poor drainage, or natural ageing of older leaves. Check if the soil feels wet several days after watering; if so, reduce watering and ensure the pot drains well. Remove only fully yellowed leaves, as partial yellowing may stabilise if conditions improve.

Brown Leaf Tips

Brown tips are often caused by dry air, inconsistent watering, or a build-up of minerals from tap water. Try to keep humidity moderate (40–60%) and water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. If possible, use rainwater or filtered water. Trim brown tips with clean scissors if desired, but avoid cutting into green tissue.

Leaf Drop

Sudden leaf drop may result from cold drafts, abrupt changes in light, or root stress (such as after repotting). Place the plant away from cold windows and radiators. Gradually adapt the plant to new locations. If roots are damaged, allow time for recovery and avoid overwatering.

Root Rot

Root rot is usually due to persistent wet soil. Signs include wilting, yellowing, and a musty smell from the pot. Remove the plant from its pot and inspect the roots. Trim away any mushy, brown roots and repot in fresh, well-draining soil. Only water when the top layer of soil is dry.

Slow Growth

Slow or stalled growth is normal in winter or low light. If growth is poor in spring or summer, check for root crowding, insufficient light, or depleted soil. Move the plant to a brighter spot (avoiding direct sun) and consider repotting if roots fill the pot.

Problems from Incorrect Placement

Lady palm prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch leaves, while deep shade may cause weak, pale growth. Adjust the plant's position if you notice these symptoms.

When Is It a Pest?

If you see sticky residue, webbing, or clusters of small insects, a pest infestation may be present. See the lady palm pest advice for identification and next steps.
