Beaucarnea Problems: Causes and Solutions

Yellow Leaves

Yellow leaves on Beaucarnea are often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Check if the soil feels wet several days after watering. If so, allow the soil to dry out more between waterings. Remove yellowed leaves only when they are fully dry and loose. Persistent yellowing may also indicate low light or old age of lower leaves.

Brown Leaf Tips

Brown tips are common and usually result from dry air, underwatering, or salt buildup in the soil. Increase humidity by placing the plant away from direct heat sources and avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Trim brown tips with clean scissors if desired, but avoid cutting into the green part of the leaf.

Leaf Drop

Some leaf drop is normal, especially for older leaves. Sudden or excessive leaf loss can be caused by temperature changes, drafts, or inconsistent watering. Keep Beaucarnea away from cold windows and avoid moving it frequently. Water only when the top few centimeters of soil are dry.

Growth Stagnation

Slow or no growth is typical in winter or low light. If growth stops during spring or summer, check for root crowding or depleted soil. Repotting every few years can help. Ensure the plant receives enough indirect light and avoid overfeeding.

Overwatering and Root Rot

Beaucarnea is sensitive to excess moisture. Signs of root rot include soft, mushy base, foul smell, and rapid yellowing. If suspected, remove the plant from its pot, trim away affected roots, and replant in fresh, well-draining soil. Reduce watering frequency and always empty excess water from saucers.
