Orchids

For most homes, a butterfly orchid (Phalaenopsis) is the most forgiving choice: it flowers for a long time and copes well with normal room conditions. Choose based on your spot and routine: pick a plant with several healthy buds if you want longer enjoyment, and select a pot size that matches your windowsill or table (small pots fit compact spaces, larger plants make more impact). If you tend to forget watering, choose a setup with a proper inner pot and drainage so excess water can’t stay around the roots.

Choose an orchid without a pot if you already have a decorative pot at home and want to match your interior exactly—just make sure the orchid stays in its grow pot and can drain. Choose an orchid in a pot if you want a ready-to-place look with a suitable decorative cover. Pick an orchid set if you want a styled arrangement (often combined with other small plants and a tray) that’s easy to place as one piece; it also helps you keep the display cohesive, but check that each plant in the set has similar light needs in the chosen spot.

Orchids do best in bright, indirect light: near an east or west window is often ideal. Avoid harsh midday sun on the leaves (especially behind glass), which can scorch them. A steady indoor temperature works well; keep the plant away from radiators, cold drafts, and frequently opened exterior doors. If your orchid blooms less, light is usually the first thing to improve—move it slightly closer to the window without putting it in full sun.

The key is letting the roots breathe and never leaving water standing at the bottom. Water only when the growing medium has dried noticeably and the roots look more silvery than green. Give water, let it drain completely, and empty any excess from the decorative pot or tray. Use a pot with inner drainage, and don’t pack the plant into dense soil—orchids need an airy medium. Yellowing leaves combined with soft roots is a common sign you’re watering too often.
