Ornamental Grasses and Bamboo

Choose ornamental grasses if you want a softer, airy effect with lots of movement and seasonal change; they work well as accents in borders and in pots. Choose bamboo if you want a stronger, more architectural look or a year-round screen; it’s often used as a natural divider or to add evergreen structure. Also consider growth behaviour: many bamboos can spread if not managed, while most ornamental grasses stay in a clump.

For sunny spots, many ornamental grasses and several bamboo types perform well, especially if the soil doesn’t dry out completely. For partial shade, bamboo is often a reliable choice for greenery and screening, while some grasses prefer brighter light for best colour and flowering. For pots and balconies, choose compact, clump-forming options and plan for regular watering; wind and sun dry containers faster than open ground.

For structure in a border, combine a few larger clumps as focal points with lower grasses for a layered look. For privacy, bamboo is usually the quickest way to create a dense, vertical screen, while tall grasses give a lighter, see-through “veil” effect. For a natural divider along a path or terrace, keep spacing consistent and think about the mature width—ornamental grasses broaden over time, and bamboo needs enough room (and sometimes root control) to stay where you want it.

Water well during establishment and during dry periods—especially plants in pots. Avoid letting the root ball dry out completely, as both grasses and bamboo can suffer from repeated drought stress. In spring, remove old or damaged growth to refresh the plant and keep it tidy; many ornamental grasses are cut back before new growth starts, while bamboo is usually thinned and cleaned rather than cut to the ground. If you choose bamboo, check whether it is clump-forming or spreading and manage it accordingly to prevent unwanted spread.
