Dog food — frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right life stage and activity level (puppy, adult, sporty, senior, light)?
Choose a puppy formula for growing dogs — these have nutrients and energy for bone and brain development and smaller kibble or breed‑specific recipes for large‑breed puppies. Choose an adult maintenance recipe for steady-weight, typical activity dogs. Choose a sporty/active formula if your dog has very high daily energy needs — these contain more calories and often higher protein and fat. Choose senior or light formulas if your dog is older, less active, or needs weight control — they have adjusted calories and joint‑support ingredients. Always match both life stage and activity level, transition gradually over about a week, and consult your vet for growth, pregnancy or medical conditions.
My dog has food sensitivities — when should I pick grain‑free, hydrolyzed, or vegetarian formulas?
Choose grain‑free if your dog reacts specifically to cereals, but remember grain‑free does not guarantee relief from all allergies because proteins like chicken, beef or dairy are common triggers. Choose a hydrolyzed formula when a veterinarian suspects or confirms a protein allergy — hydrolyzed proteins are broken down to reduce immune reactions and are used in elimination trials. Choose a vegetarian formula only for adult dogs after checking the label for complete nutrient provision and ideally after veterinary advice; these are not usually recommended for growing puppies or heavily working dogs. For sensitivities, run an elimination trial under vet guidance and monitor skin, coat and stool rather than switching randomly.
Should I choose different kibble types or textures (pressed, dry kibble, wet) and sizes for mini vs maxi breeds?
Choose kibble size and texture to match jaw size and chewing behaviour: small bites for mini breeds, larger pieces for maxi breeds to encourage chewing. Pressed kibble can be denser and more calorie‑dense — choose smaller portions when switching and watch body condition. Wet food or softer textures can help picky eaters or those with dental issues, while larger, firmer kibbles can help reduce tartar build‑up. Avoid choking hazards by matching piece size to your dog and adjust portion size when changing between dry, pressed or wet formats.
I want to improve weight, coat or digestion — how do I pick a formula for these goals?
Choose a light/senior or weight‑management formula if weight loss or maintenance is the goal; these have lower energy density, higher fibre and tailored fat levels. Choose higher‑protein, controlled‑fat formulas for muscle maintenance in active dogs. For coat and skin, pick diets with added omega‑3/6 fatty acids and zinc; for digestion choose easily digestible proteins, moderate fat and added fibre or probiotics. Use complete, single formulas rather than mixing many products; change food gradually, track body condition and stool quality, and consult your vet before major diet changes or if problems persist.
